This is a large, rough, blue opal thunderegg from the Owyhee area of Central Oregon. The specimen weighs 4 pounds, 7.5 ounces and measures 6 3/4" x 5" x 3 3/4". Sometimes, thundereggs are found enmasse, and the collector is unable to separate them individually; such is the case here. These appear to be two eggs stuck together with a portion of a third at the bottom. On the back you can see where the piece was broken off a fourth opal egg. Because of the fractures in the opal, this is specimen quality and not suitable for cabbing or faceting. There's plenty of bubbly rhyolite crust, characteristic of other Central Oregon thundereggs. It's a lovely specimen.
